How to Test a Tentative Thesis
A good thesis sentence is:
a) A central idea that requires supporting evidence
b) Of adequate scope for an essay of the assigned length
c) Sharply focused
A good thesis statement cannot be a fact or a description.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself in order to determine the workability of your thesis.
1) Is my thesis too obvious? If you cannot come up with interpretations that oppose your own, consider revising your thesis.
2) Does my thesis require an essay’s worth of development? Or will I run out of points too quickly?
3) Can I support my thesis with the evidence available?
4) Can I explain why readers will want to read an essay with this thesis?
